Home Energy Baseline

Normalize monthly electricity and fuel use by time, area, occupants, and weather using transparent conversions and descriptive regression.

Interpret carefully: weather-adjusted values are estimates from a simple historical association. They do not prove savings, causation, equipment performance, or billing accuracy. Degree-day base temperatures and fuel energy content must match your source; occupancy, behavior, tariffs, and building changes can confound comparisons.

Property assumptions

Energy conversions: 1 MWh = 1,000 kWh; 1 therm = 29.300111 kWh; 1 MMBtu = 293.07107 kWh; 1 GJ = 277.777778 kWh. Floor area: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m². Fuel volume is intentionally excluded because heat content varies.

Weather regression diagnostics

Calculate with at least six suitable months.

Model: monthly kWh = intercept + HDD coefficient × HDD + CDD coefficient × CDD. Predictors with no variation are omitted and reported. Weather-adjusted energy = actual − prediction at observed weather + prediction at the dataset’s average weather.
