Sun Position & Shadow Calculator

Find the sun's elevation and azimuth at a place and time, the sunrise and sunset, the day length, and the shadow a pole casts. Enter a latitude and longitude (with the timezone offset of the clock time you'll enter), a date, and a clock time; the tool applies the equation of time and longitude correction to convert clock time to local solar time, works out the solar declination for the day, and returns the elevation and compass azimuth of the sun plus the cardinal direction. Add a pole height to see the shadow length and the direction it points. Useful for siting solar panels, photography, gardening, architecture and archaeology. Pure arithmetic — a NOAA-style simplified algorithm; real values shift a few tenths of a degree with atmospheric refraction (raise the observed elevation near the horizon) and the year (leap years nudge the declination), so treat the result as good to about ±0.5°. Everything runs locally in your browser.
